"Kawan envisions an undergraduate and graduate Pilipino Catholic community that is all-inclusive where members are invited to grow in their spiritual lives and understanding of Catholicism from a Pilipino scope, provides visibility of and support to the Catholic student population at and beyond UCLA, proactively educates peers about the history of Catholicism in the Philippines, and invites and supports the inclusion of the non-religious."
Founded in 2021, Kawan welcomes undergraduates, graduates, and alumni regardless of ethnicity or religion. Part of the UCC, Kawan fosters a familial and all-inclusive space for general members to build community and fellowship while they explore their Christian faith through a Pilipino scope. This is accomplished through weekly general meetings and large, quarterly programming.
General meetings (GMs) happen twice a week at the UCC:
(1) "Faith Talks" : Refer to Instagram
(2) "Prayer n' Praise" : Refer to Instagram
Kawan hosts large programming throughout the year:
(1) "Simbang Gabi" is a series of devotional masses during fall quarter that anticipates Christmas in the Philippines.
(2) "Cultural Retreat" is a collaborative event between UCC organizations (i.e., Muoi) during winter and/or spring quarters.
(3) "Kawan Banquet" is the annual, closing gala when the succeeding Executive Board is announced to the membership.
The Pilipino Catholic community also hosts fellowship events with UCC organizations and other entities beyond UCLA. This includes (1) collaborations with Maná & Muoi, (2) "Feast of Santo Niño Mass" pilgrimage to L.A. Cathedral, and (3) UC Irvine Benecon to name a few.
