"Kawan envisions an undergraduate and graduate Pilipino Catholic community that is all-inclusive where members are invited to grow in their spiritual lives and understanding of Catholicism from a Pilipino scope, provides visibility of and support to the Catholic student population at and beyond UCLA, proactively educates peers about the history of Catholicism in the Philippines, and invites and supports the inclusion of the non-religious."
Founded in late-2021 by Chloe Alviz, Richard Baal, Gabriel Ordonez, Maximus Vardeleon, Isabella Richards, and Kaela de Guzman, Kawan welcomes all undergraduates, graduates, alumni, and friends of all backgrounds into the community. As a part of the University Catholic Center (UCC), Kawan fosters a familial and uplifting space for its members while they explore the Christian faith and teachings of Jesus Christ through the Pilipino lens. Fellowship events like "Faith Talks" and “Prayer n’ Praise” and quarterly programming like "Simbang Gabi" allow Kawan to live its mission & vision in full.
We look forward to seeing you at our regularly scheduled programming and fellowship events. To learn more about our organization, please visit https://kawanatucla.org. Mabuhay!
General meetings (GMs) are regularly scheduled throughout each quarter. They are usually located at the UCC or on the UCLA campus. Please refer to our Instagram for more information.
There are two types of GMs: [1] Faith Talks and [2] Prayer n' Praise. A "Faith Talks" GM comprises talks, group activities, and presentations that address points salient to being Pilipino Catholic. During a "Prayer n' Praise" GM, participants learn new prayers and worship songs in a "youth group" setting, and feel free to bring your instruments (and voice)!
Kawan plans large programming throughout the year:
(1) "Simbang Gabi" is a series of masses that anticipates Christmas in the Philippines. In Kawan, we celebrate one mass & reception at the end of fall quarter.
(2) "Cultural Retreat" is a collaborative event between UCC entities during winter or spring quarters.
(3) "Kawan Banquet" is the annual concluding gala in spring quarter when the succeeding Baal Board is also announced and inducted.
The Pilipino Catholic community also hosts additional programming with UCC organizations and entities beyond UCLA. This includes [1] UCC collaborations with Maná, Muoi, & Ruha, [2] "Feast of Santo Niño Mass" pilgrimage to the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels, [3] UC Irvine Liwanag BeneCon, and [4] events with USC Caruso Catholic Center & TroyPhi to name a few. Please refer to our Instagram for more information throughout the year.
